A Friend Becomes a Citizen

On Friday, November 4, 2011, I drove to the home of my friend, Rathnaa, in Rogers, Arkansas. She had asked me to accompany her to her Naturalization Oath Ceremony 70 miles south, in Fort Smith. For a number of reasons, I was thrilled to go with her.

Over the five or so years I've known Rathnaa, we never talked much about her citizenship. At some point, I became aware that she lived here on a work visa. About a year ago, she started talking about becoming a citizen.

I don't know about you, but when I get a notion to find something in one of my books, I often end up taking detours. I started out to read some from a college Logic textbook and thought I'd pull my encyclopedia for a bit of an overview.

I have this habit of strolling, on the way to whatever I'm looking up. So, I'm going through the "L"s, and I read about Lawrence of Arabia, lamination, and law, and then I come to rest on Stephen Leacock, the author.

Hope there's room in the neighborhood

Imitation is said to be the sincerest form of flattery. In the writing world, they call it plagiarism. In thinking how to get moving on those book projects, with absolutely no experience behind me, I began rearranging my life on blogspot and searching about for inspiration.
